Colorado Auto Insurance Minimums: What the Law Requires vs. What You Actually Need

Colorado requires every driver to carry auto insurance. What the law requires and what actually protects you in a serious accident are two different conversations.

What Colorado Law Requires

Colorado’s minimum auto insurance requirements are:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury liability
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury liability
  • $15,000 per accident for property damage liability

These are the floors. Carry at least this much and you’re legal to drive in Colorado.

Where Minimums Fall Short

The problem with minimum coverage is that it was designed to meet a legal threshold, not to protect you financially in a real accident.

Consider what a serious injury claim actually costs. Medical bills, lost wages, rehabilitation, and potential legal action can add up to well over $25,000 for a single person. If the claim exceeds your liability limits, you’re personally responsible for the difference. Your wages, your savings, your assets.

The property damage minimum has the same issue. A newer vehicle can easily exceed $15,000 in damage. If you rear-end someone driving a $50,000 truck, minimum coverage leaves a significant gap that comes out of your pocket.

What Most Colorado Drivers Should Actually Carry

A more realistic minimum for most drivers is $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident for bodily injury liability, and $100,000 for property damage. This gives you meaningful protection without a dramatic jump in premium, but whether that’s enough completely depends on your financial landscape.

Beyond that, the coverages that tend to matter most are uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, which is covered in detail in a separate post, and comprehensive and collision if you’re driving anything you couldn’t easily replace out of pocket.

The Honest Take

Carrying minimum coverage in Colorado is a financial risk wearing the mask of compliance. It satisfies the law, but it leaves you exposed in any accident serious enough to matter. The premium difference between minimum coverage and more reasonable limits is usually smaller than most people expect.
